    Summary

This program seeks to fund innovative projects that have the potential to make a significant impact on improving the function, wellness, and overall quality of life for injured military Service Members and Veterans, their caregivers and family members, and the American public. It challenges the scientific community to design innovative research that will foster new directions for and address neglected issues in the field of reconstructive transplantation (RT), specifically vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA)-focused research, also known as composite tissue allotransplantation (CTA). Focus areas include:
    • Immune Rejection
      • Understanding mechanisms of immune rejection
      • Immunomodulation approaches and mechanisms, e.g., tolerance induction, chimerism
      • Optimizing immunosuppressive drug regimens
    • Tissue Preservation
      • Understanding mechanisms of ischemic and/or reperfusion injury in composite tissue grafts
      • Prolonging allograft preservation
      • Mitigating ischemic injury
    • Graft Surveillance-Clinical Monitoring
      • Histopathology
      • Imaging
      • Immune profiling, e.g., gene expression, graft rejection markers, cytokine screens
      • Vasculopathy
    • RT Recipient Outcomes
      • Rehabilitation to improve transplant function
      • Patient selection criteria as correlates to VCA outcomes
      • National shared data repository
    • Standardization of Processes and Protocol
      • Collaboration in clinical protocol standardization, which may include endpoint selection, assay selection, and functional outcomes measures
      • Techniques for tracking long-term outcomes
      • Standardization of procedures for pathology
    • Unique Focus Area
      • Describe how the work is applicable to research for the injured military and/or Veteran population requiring RT of the face and extremities to include genitourinary injuries of both men and women.

    Additional Information

Applications from investigators within the military Services and applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military Services, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other Federal Government agencies are highly encouraged. Though this program supports groundbreaking research, all projects must demonstrate solid scientific rationale with military-relevant utility.
