    Summary

    The M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust seeks to enrich the quality of life in the Pacific Northwest by providing grants and enrichment programs to non-profit organizations that seek to strengthen the region's educational, spiritual, and cultural base in creative and sustainable ways.

    Through the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust, three types of grants are available: 

    1. General Grants - There are three areas of interest to the Trust, which are:
      1. Education: Projects and programs offered in both formal and informal settings. Emphasis is placed on program enhancement or expansion, as well as new approaches consistent with the applicant institution's mission and resources.
      2. Arts & Culture: Performance and visual arts projects which enrich the cultural environment of the region are of great interest to the Trust. It especially values educational outreach efforts.
      3. Health and Human Services: The Trust is interested in a diverse range of projects and programs to enhance the quality of life in the region. Emphasis is on preventive efforts which address physical, spiritual, social, and psychological needs. Programs with a focus on youth are especially valued.
    2. General Scientific Research Grants: The Trust prefers projects and programs in the natural sciences whose main objective is the acquisition of new knowledge. Training students in conducting research is an important consideration.
    3. Formal Program Grants in Science: The Trust has initiated five formal grants programs in the sciences. Procedures vary for applying to one or another of the formal program grants, and interested organizations should review these programs as well for specific details.

    Additional Information

    The following kinds of requests are NOT considered:
    • For funds that will ultimately be passed through to other organizations.
    • For sectarian or religious organizations whose principal activity is for the primary benefit of their own members or adherents.
    • For long-term loans, debt retirement, or operational deficits.
    • For institutions that in policy or practice unfairly discriminate against race, ethnic origin, sex, creed, or religion.
    • For propagandizing or for influencing legislation and elections.
    • From specific individuals and for their personal benefit.
    • From individuals unauthorized to act on behalf of a qualified tax-exempt organization.
    The following kinds of requests are RARELY considered:
    • For normal ongoing operations, including existing staff, or for the continuation of existing projects.
    • For continuation of programs previously financed from other external sources.
    • For organizations organized and operating outside any U.S. state or territory.
    • For urgent needs, emergency funding, or gap funding.
    • For endowments or revolving funds that act as such.
    • For funds to be distributed to beneficiaries of the organization's choosing.

  • Eligibility Details

    Organizations which have been ruled to be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and which are not private foundations are eligible

    Priority is given to projects and programs conducted by qualified organizations within Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.

    Deadline Details

    There are no deadlines for submission of the letter of inquiry to the Trust.

    Award Details

    Grant award size varies depending upon organization and project. Requests for less than $50,000 are generally discouraged.
