    The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa is a leading voice and catalyst for connecting donors, nonprofit organizations, professional advisers, community leaders and other partners to inspire charitable giving and improve the quality of life in communities across the state. The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa support organizations within Black Hawk County in the following fields of interest:

    • Arts and Culture: Supporting the creative arts, including theater, music, painting, sculpture, dance, strengthening the programs of local museums and libraries;
    • Community Affairs and Development: Including the administration of justice, development of employment and training, encouragement of citizen participation in community affairs, and enhancement of local community resources;
    • Education: Improving the quality of education through support of both public and private institutions of learning;
    • Environment Education and Protection: Supporting conservation of natural resources, preventing and eliminating pollution, preserving water quality, protecting wildlife, and educating the public about environmental priorities;
    • Health: Helping alleviate human suffering through support of institutions dedicated to healing and wholeness of life through improvement of health care, prevention of substance abuse, research into the causes and prevention of disease;
    • Historical Preservation: Assisting groups engaged in restoring structures and artifacts of historical importance to the area; and
    • Human Services: Assisting with programming efforts that address issues important to youth, women, minorities, the elderly, the handicapped, and families in need.

    Other than general support to Black Hawk County organizations The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa has established these other grant opportunities:

    • Bringing Neighbors Together - Bringing Neighbors Together is a program of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa that provides grants to support neighborhoods in Black Hawk County. CFNEIA believes that bringing neighbors together is the key to creating a stronger community. To help strengthen neighborhoods this program supports creative and impactful neighborhood-centric, event-based programs in Black Hawk County.
    • The goals of the Bringing Neighbors Together grants:
      • Encourage community-building within neighborhoods
      • Make more resources available to neighborhoods
      • Empower residents to be involved in solving neighborhood and community issues
      • Help establish or strengthen neighborhood associations
      • Reduce crime through activities that build neighborhood unity
    • Mitchell and Howard County Opportunity Fund - Mitchell-Howard County Opportunity Fund grants are available to nonprofit organizations that serve to meet crucial needs in the areas of education and environment in the communities of Mitchell County and Howard County, Iowa.
    • Teen Trust Grants - The Teen Trust program is a model for youth philanthropy. Each year, a diverse group of students from area high schools grant $15,000 to 501(c)(3) nonprofit agencies in Black Hawk County. Using a grant application system, site visits, and training seminars, the Trustees work as a team to decide which organizations to assist through financial aid or volunteerism.
    • Veridian Credit Union Fund Grants - Veridian Credit Union® AND the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa partner to offer grants in support of Veridian's Financial Literacy and Inclusive Community programs.
      • Financial Literacy - The purpose of the Financial Literacy Grant is to help improve financial literacy among adults and children.
      • Inclusive Community - The purpose of the Inclusive Community Grant is to help create a community that is welcoming and inclusive of all individuals. Organizations applying for this grant must value the participation of all people in its activities. An activity is considered inclusive if a variety of communities/backgrounds are participating together in one place.
    • Women's Fund Grant - Women's Fund grants are available to projects that address issues that lead to long-term change for Black Hawk County and Cedar Valley women, girls and families in the areas of: education and literacy, poverty and homelessness, violence and safety, health and healthcare. The Women's Fund, as advised by Women in Philanthropy members and the Community Foundation, awards grants to organizations that are able to make the best use of an impact grant. Priority will be given to opportunities that provide a response to critical and urgent needs, initiate bold new ventures, and foster new approaches to ongoing problems.
    • CommUNIversity Grant - The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa are partnering to create CommUNIversity, an experiential learning opportunity to benefit both students and the nonprofit organizations in the Cedar Valley. The collaboration between nonprofit organizations and students for this assignment is mutually beneficial and provides:
      • An authentic, real-life setting for students, coupled with the guidance and support of the partner nonprofit professionals and their academic instructor.
      • An end product for each organization that includes multiple proposals with content and information the organization's professionals can draw from in their continued grant seeking and fundraising endeavors.

    Eligible applicants must be one of the following:

    • 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization OR
    • Government entity OR
    • Other type of tax-exempt organization looking to use funds for charitable intent
    • Individuals
    • Businesses/For-Profit Companies
    • Churches for purpose of advancing one religion/evangelism
    • Associations or Economic Development Groups for activities directly benefiting their members

    If you are a group, club, association, or organization that does NOT fit the above criteria, but are seeking funding for a charitable project, consider partnering with a 501(c)(3) OR government agency that can be your fiscal sponsor and apply on your group's behalf.

    Deadline Details

    The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa accepts applications in two cycles. Black Hawk County First Cycle November 15 to January 15 and Second Cycle May 15 to July 15. Uplift Grant applications are accepted April 5 to May 1.


    Other grant program deadlines are as follows:

    • Bringing Neighbors Together: Applications are accepted throughout the year.
    • Mitchell and Howard County Opportunity Fund: Applications are accepted from August 1 to October 31 annually.
    • Teen Trust Grants: Applications are accepted from October 25 to December 13 annually. (Black Hawk County)
    • Veridian Credit Union Fund Grants: Applications are accepted from May 15 to July 15 annually.
    • Women's Fund Grant: Applications are accepted from May 15 to July 15 annually. (Black Hawk County)

    Community Foundation grants vary based on scope and size of project. No cost sharing/match is required.

    • Bringing Neighbors Together: Award amounts vary. Awards range from $500 up to $2,000.
    • Mitchell and Howard County Opportunity Fund: Award amounts vary.
    • Teen Trust Grants: Awards are up to $15,000.
    • Veridian Credit Union Fund Grants: Grants up to $5,000 will be awarded.
    • Women's Fund Grant: Project requests of up to $20,000 will be accepted.
