The annual Shell Science Lab Challenge Competition recognizes exceptional and innovative science educators created in 2010, to recognize outstanding middle and high school programs for their exemplary approaches to science lab instruction utilizing limited school and laboratory resources, and raise awareness and exposure of the outstanding work being done in the science education field. The Challenge will showcase the work of teachers, representing their schools, who submit innovative, replicable strategies to deliver quality lab experiences.
Applicants are required to complete a Shell Science Lab Challenge Application describing (in 2 pages or less for each of the three components) your philosophy of science teaching; the school's current limited laboratory facilities and resources and why they might be classified as "limited"; and an innovative use of limited laboratory equipment and resources you have implemented in your classroom.
The Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge is sponsored by Shell, whose support entails professional development to science educators to improve their content knowledge and instructional methods, and to improve science instruction in classrooms and science labs.
Eligible applicants are middle and high school science teachers (Grades 6–12) in the United States and Canada (with special attention to urban and underrepresented groups). For 2021 the following communities are prioritized:
