    Summary

    The purpose of this Safe Schools Fund Grant is to provide funding for school safety and security related matters. The grant funds are to be applied toward the cost of school safety-related projects and services outlined below:

    • Conducting and training teams to conduct school safety assessments.
    • Establishing formal and anonymous mechanisms for reporting safety concerns.
    • Reimbursing local law enforcement agencies for school resource officer training provided by the Center.
    • Enrolling school security employees in training provided by the Center.
    • Developing plans to deliver school-based behavioral health and other wraparound services to students who exhibit behaviors of concern, including establishing systems to maximize external funding for services
    • Outreach to the broader school community to improve school safety, including heightening awareness of existing mental health services and other services.
    • Providing information to students and parents on traveling safely to and from school, including data related to bus and pedestrian safety, strategies for ensuring personal safety, efforts of the local school system to improve safety, and information on available options for reporting incidents and concerns.
    • Assisting local school systems to improve and monitor traffic control measures in the immediate vicinity of schools to reduce the potential for pedestrian and vehicle accidents.

    Local school systems are encouraged to use the guidance provided under the purpose of the grant” when coming up with project ideas for this grant. Below is a list of allowable expenses under this grant. Please note that this list is not all-inclusive.

    • Contractual services (e.g., contractual services or personnel, project partners, subject matter experts, etc.)
    • Materials and supplies (e.g. outreach materials, learning kits, training supplies, etc.)
    • Equipment and associated delivery and installation costs (e.g., radios, security cameras, visitor management systems, etc.)
    • Training (e.g., include Incident Command Systems (ICS) training, National Incident Management System (NIMS) training, training registration costs, etc.)
    • Security related software
    • Other charges that have a direct correlation to the overall project or task being performed. These will be considered on a case by case basis.
     

    History of Funding

    Up to $600,000 was available in funding in 2021 and 2022.

  • Eligibility Details

    Funding for The Safe Schools Fund Grant is open to all twenty-four (24) local school systems within the State of Maryland. 

    Deadline Details

    Applications are to be submitted by September 29, 2023. A similar deadline is anticipated annually.

    Award Details

    Approximately $600,000 is available in 2023. Each district may apply for up to the maximum allowable amount of $25,000. Project period is from July 1, 2023 through December 31, 2024. No cost sharing or matching is required.
